Everyone wants to eat good food, good tasting food. That’s just human nature. However most people believe that if they eat ONLY FOOD that there won’t be anything that tastes good in their daily diet. For those that think that way I must correct you, real food tastes good, the problem is that you have been addicted to chemicals in your foods and excess sugar beyond what is safe to consume. You are in reality a walking addict, unfortunately society is supportive of food addicts (whether you are fat, obese or within a healthy weight), so you are a walking addict in denial.
Evolution provided us with taste buds that are supposed to help us navigate the natural food environment, but sometimes we consider that boring and sometimes we are not educated enough to know what the “natural food environment is”, or sometimes we can’t afford that environment.
Our appetite gravitates towards foods that are sweet, salty and fatty, because the body knows such foods contain energy and nutrients that we need for survival. But our obsessive-compulsive behavior leads us to uncontrollably desire for excess sweets, salts and fatty foods.
Obviously, if a food manufacturer wants to succeed and get people to buy their product, it has to taste good and be addictive.
But today, the competition is fierce and the desire to increase the bottom line in their business has tilted the scale to food manufacturing regardless the harm to others.
For this reason, massive resources are spent on making foods as addicting as possible.
Many processed foods have been engineered to be so incredibly “rewarding” to the brain, that they overpower anything we might have come across in nature. An this is a perfect definition of addiction.
We have complicated mechanisms in our bodies and brains that are supposed to regulate energy balance (how much we eat and how much we burn) which, until the past 50 years or so in evolutionary history, worked to keep us at a healthy weight. The only derailing factors to that have been excessive sugars in foods and processed foods which completely override any natural governor in our systems.
There is insurmountable evidence that addictive chemicals and sugars plus the momentary value of a food to the individual at the time of ingestion of foods can bypass the innate defense mechanism and make us start eating much more than we need, so much that it starts to compromise our health.
The truth is, processed foods are so incredibly rewarding and addicting to our brains that they affect our thoughts and behavior, and numb our senses making us eat more and more until eventually we become ill.
Good real food is good, but foods that are engineered to be hyper rewarding, and so addictive that effectively short circuit our innate brakes against overconsumption, are NOT good.
In conclusion: The choice is yours, overcoming an addiction is super hard…living in pain and shame is harder. READ INGREDIENT LABELS and don’t buy any food that is chemically processed, this will get rid of the “food drug dealers” from our supermarkets.
